Action for climate should be as strong as for COVID-19

A recent UK poll from Opinium showed that a large majority of people think the government should respond with the same urgency to climate change as it has with Covid-19.

48% of people agree with this, whereas only 28% disagree. These figures are a green light for the government to be more ambitious in the fight for the climate.

Public opinion is moving fast, but people are getting frustrated that governments are not taking action fast enough.

Coronavirus has produced a major and unprecedented fall in CO2 emissions. However, it also shows that the task ahead is bigger than ever.

An analysis from the website CarbonBrief showed that the Covid-19 crisis has cut emissions by 5.5%, but scientists say that we would need a sustained 7.6% reduction each year to keep global warming under 1.5°C.
