Look around you: our home is filled with stuff, but we rarely consider the impact of these objects on the environment.
Furniture: it’s the first thing you will see, and it can have a big impact! What materials have been used to create this furniture? Where do they come from? Have they been sourced ethically and sustainably?
Energy provider: our homes can have large carbon emissions if we consider the energy we use: if you use mainly electricity, where is this electricity coming from? Is it from coil and fossil fuels? Nuclear energy? Or clean renewable energy? You can choose your energy provider and ensure they provide 100% renewable energy. If you use gas for heating, try to consider if your home is well insulated, to keep the heat inside and avoid spending too much gas, which is a fossil fuel that generates big emissions!
Cleaning products: Most cleaning products found in supermarkets contain toxic chemicals that can affect your health, your skin and pollute water. Also, they come in plastic bottles. Industrial cleaning products often contain toxic chemicals, and contribute to indoor air pollution. According to the World Health Organisation, 3.8 million deaths are attributed to household air pollution annually, including mould, building materials, home products, volatile organic compounds (VOC’s).
Other objects: Finally, look at the little objects around you like reed diffusers for the smell, candles, linen…Are they made ethically, with natural and sustainable ingredients or fabrics?
